From April 2012 until September 2014, Dr Gumley was CEO of the Australian operations of Hutchison Ports Holdings, responsible for $700m of new infrastructure development of container facilities at Port Botany and Brisbane, and rail/truck intermodal facility at Enfield NSW.
Between February 2004 and July 2011, Dr Gumley was the Chief Executive Officer of the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO), Canberra which was responsible for acquisition and sustainment of Australia's specialised military equipment. At the time, DMO had over 7000 staff, $120 billion of business under management and an annual cash budget of over $11 billion. In the international arena, Dr Gumley was Australia's National Armaments Director.
Previously, Dr Gumley was CEO of the Australian Submarine Corporation. In this role, he was responsible for the turnaround in performance of that organisation culminating in a Cabinet decision to award a $3.5 billion contract to the company for 25 years' support, maintenance and enhancement of the Australian submarine fleet. Previously, he managed a 3400 person business unit for Boeing in Seattle USA as Vice President (Information Services). Between the early 1980s and the late 1990s, he was CEO of various medium-sized technology, manufacturing, I.T., services, and exporting companies in Australia, and as an entrepreneur in start-up and development of new companies in technological areas.
Dr Gumley has recently served roles as Interim CEO of Murray Irrigation Limited (Oct 2014 to May 2015), advisor to the board committee responsible for the Goulburn Murray Water Connections $2 billion irrigation project (March 2015 to April 2016), and as a non-executive Director of AMOG Holdings, a specialist professional engineering services company (March 2015 to present).
Dr Gumley has organically grown businesses, reformed failing existing businesses as a change agent, and was a Public Company Director during a successful IPO. His skills are leadership of complex organisations, strong commercial acumen, M&A activity (Australia and overseas), program management, financial judgement, successful interaction between public and private sectors, and keen understanding of organisational motivation in all aspects of business.
Dr Gumley’s business development experiences included hands-on key customer, acquisition, and strategic work in Asia, North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific zone. His experience with innovation includes being part of the founding teams of several technology based startups in the 1980s and 1990s that were successful in Australia and internationally.
