The Hon. David Feeney is a Senior Fellow at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), an independent, non-partisan think tank established by the Commonwealth Government to provide advice for Australia’s strategic and defence leaders.
During his parliamentary career, David held a number of defence portfolios in both government and opposition. As the former Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, David’s responsibilities included ADF Reserves, ADF force structure (especially Plan BEERSHEBA), the Pacific Maritime Security Plan (PMSP), liaison with Pacific Island countries and participating in the first South Pacific Defence Ministers Meeting (SPDMM) in Tonga. He commissioned the Department of Defence workforce review, Plan Suakin, in 2010.
David was a contributing author in Peter J. Dean, Stephan Fruhling and Brendan Taylor (eds.), Australia’s American Alliance (Melbourne University Publishing, Carlton) and in Tom Frame (ed.), The Long Road. Australia’s Train, Advise and Assist Missions (UNSW Press, Sydney).
Prior to entering Parliament, he served as the ALP Assistant National Secretary, ALP Campaign Director for South Australia, Director of Strategy for the former Premier of Victoria, the Hon. Steve Bracks and Victorian Labor State Secretary.
David is a member of the Advisory Board of NIOA, a 100% Australian defence company. He holds a Master of Public Policy and Management (MPPM) from Monash University and a Graduate Diploma in Arts (Advanced) from the University of Melbourne. David is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD).
