The Victorian Government purchased the former General Motors Holden site at Fishermans Bend in 2016 and is transforming it into a new Precinct of Excellence for advanced manufacturing, design and engineering. Our vision is for it to be a world class advanced manufacturing and engineering hub with a focus on the defence and transport industries.

The hub being created at Fishermans Bend will be a place where business, industry and researchers work together in the areas of aerospace, defence, marine design, engineering, technology and automotive design – sharing and developing skills, knowledge, research and connections.

In December 2017, the University of Melbourne announced that its School of Engineering will move to Fishermans Bend. The University will join leading organisations like Boeing Aerostructures Australia, Supacat and the Defence Science and Technology Group which all have a significant presence at Fishermans Bend.

The high-skilled, high-value “knowledge jobs” that will be created at Fishermans Bend will help ensure that Victoria's defence industry remains innovative, globally competitive and at the leading edge of providers serving the Australian Defence Force and global supply chains.
