Advocating for Local Content and Jobs

The SEA 1000 Future Submarine Program will be the largest defence acquisition in Australia's history. The Victorian, Western Australian and South Australian Governments sent a joint letter to the Chair of the Senate Economics References Committee outlining their common view and commitment to maximising Australian industry participation in the Program.

Among other things, their recommendations included:

  • a contractual requirement that the prime contractors work with the Department of Defence to optimise Australian industry involvement
  • a minimum 60 percent target for Australian industry involvement
  • a contractual obligation that Australian organisations receive, apply and develop the technology and know-how from the primes
  • establishing clearinghouses in relation to the primes accessing local industry, and for the research scientific and development work required to support the Program.
