Rheinmetall Defence Australia confirms new R&D centre for Melbourne

Rheinmetall Defence Australia has confirmed that it will establish a new research and development centre in Melbourne, the Technology Centre for Light-weight Applications (TECLAB).

TECLAB’s initial focus will be around developing technologies in relation to land programs (eg improving capability for LAND 121 and LAND 400). It will collaborate with R&D organisations and stakeholders from across Australia, including CSIRO, Defence Science and Technology Group, the university sector and state governments.

TECLAB’s initial areas of research include:

  • Lightweight high performance materials for automotive and military applications, in partnership with the CSIRO and Swinburne University of Technology;
  • Advanced and hybrid manufacturing, in partnership with CSIRO and Swinburne University of Technology;
  • Autonomous systems, in partnership with the Queensland University of Technology; and
  • Advanced sensing, in partnership with the University of South Australia.
